we are in a media literacy crisis

friendly reminder that characters don’t need to be saints to be entertaining. and telling a story does not mean endorsement. art does not need to be all about morally good people.

IDK if this was meant as hyperbole but it’s literally true:

Adult literacy is low.

Child literacy is low.

Information literacy has shifted dramatically in the last decade, but reputable information sources like research journals and factual news reporting have been unable to keep pace.

We are genuinely in a crisis of media literacy, with ever fewer genuinely factual resources available in the style and language used by contemporary audiences.

It may sound condescending, but we genuinely need to remind people, or worse, explain to them for the first time that art is not evidence of real world behaviour.

So, thank you, for this reminder. Genuinely.

You’re correct:

Art does not need to feature exclusively morally pure characters. Art is not proof of the creator’s secret, violent desires.

hey science side of tumblr, if you’re not on your union mandated lunch break, a question for you

when these resin casts are made and the top is sorta like, opaque (if that’s the right word) how come when the liquid resin is poured on top and then sets, that it becomes perfectly clear

Because of light refraction! Basically when you sand Resin casts (or in this case, from sanding the pinecones down) you wind up with an absolute fuckton of tiny scratches in the surface, and light that hits it bounces in all kinds of weird directions. But, since liquid resin can still bond with set resin, pouring a *very thin* layer of it over the top fills in the imperfections and makes the surface smooth like glass, so the light travels in a normal pattern again

thanks nerd >:3c

This kind of response always fascinates me, so while I’ve got you here, can I just ask: legal by what standards? Do you mean real world standards, where laws vary from country to country, and in the case of the US, state to state? Or do you mean the fictitious laws set in place in the fictional setting of the ship? What standard exactly should we use to tell people “you’re not allowed to enjoy this fictional thing?”

I know you didn’t mean any harm by your response, but I feel it’s important to reiterate that nothing gives anyone the right to police what people do in a fictional setting, full stop. Because at the end of the day, it’s fiction, it’s a fantasy, none of it is real, and so real world rules and standards do not apply. So, as long as you are not actively causing harm in a real world setting (i.e. harassing real people over fictional ships) then you do you.

a very important addition

Everyone pushing the line on the “It’s immoral to depict any content that’s illegal!” stance are either going to be massively horrified or massively thrilled if LGBATIQ content is made illegal again.

So if that’s *your* stance, I’ve got to wonder which one you are, and why you’re so comfortable with the company you’re keeping.

having to explain very extremely basic concepts of harm reduction to internet puritans is so bizarre. like Yes there are some kinks that will always carry an inherent risk of injury, Yes people should be made fully aware of that as part of informed consent, No that cannot be accomplished by you telling everyone how yucky icky awful terrible kink is and how it’s inherently patriarchal and evil and should be morally mandated out of existence
